Planning is the key to success!
In the teaching learning process, planning is everything! It is extremely important that since the very beginning all the subjects, activities and assessment process is planned, so, teachers, students and even parents are going to have a clear idea about what will be developed.
Fortunately, at my school, most of the techers recognize the importance of the planning process and we agree to meet at the beginning of the year, before students come to study, in order to work as a team, check and evaluate the curriculum, so we may know the strenghts and weaknesses it has and what adjustments must be done! Of course, every teacher has his/her own style and way to let students know the topics, objectives and goals of the course... what really matters is that every student should be clear in order to avoid misunderstandings along the academic year.
In my case, I create a small syllabus and I always share it with my students at the beginning of every academic term, I include the topics, the goals, the final assignment, the activities that must be done if they fail the term and maybe the most important element is the self-evaluation chart where they can reflect on their own process and commitment and the grade they give me, represent the 20% of the final grade each term. As I need to be sure, every student and parents know what is going to be studied and asked during the term, I always ask them to paste a copy in their notebooks and it must be signed for their parents. In spite of being for the english class, I always write it in Spanish, so I can ensure all the information is clear for every person who reads it!
